Goals on fire

January 1st, it’s time to make new commitments and set new goals.

Everyone gets excited with the arrival of the new year. We have just spent an eventful night with friends and family celebrating, or with ourselves thinking deeply. In both cases, we have had time to reflect on the last 365 days and perhaps we have been emotional about the disappointments or successes, the sadness or joy that last year brought. We might feel proud of our goals achieved and pushed to do more. That’s how many people feel in the first few weeks of January. We tend to get this fire inside that leads us to do better. We are motivated to set harder goals, but the risk is that in following our emotions we often don’t think rationally and end up setting unrealistic goals.

But the good news is, I am here to help you this time. I’m here to help you plan your next trimester and set appropriate goals that bring you accomplishment and joy.

Is there a new me every January 1st?

Are you a January runner, biker or swimmer? Do you feel that every January 1st you end up talking with yourself saying “New Year, New Me. Starting tomorrow I will run everyday no matter what!”. And then what? When tomorrow arrives, there is still the old you that will never go outside in the cold and dark?!?! Or even worse, you exercise so intensely for 10 days in a row and then something stops you. I know it’s hard to restart after the Christmas vacation, I totally agree.

Let me tell you something, in the last 30 years I have learned that goal-setting does not have to be black and white, and we can’t go from 0 to 100 immediately. There is a lot of gray area and we can achieve our goal of 100, but we need to experience all the 99 numbers before.

If you were getting faster results 10 years ago and now it’s different, just remember you are not a teenager anymore and it’s not worse, it just requires more consistency and perseverance. We need to work on our active routine, play safe everyday and never burn out. I really encourage you to push harder this January, because if you want you can. Try to add an additional indoor workout, a cardio activity over the weekend and set a new goal with the consultation of your active coach. Challenge your body and mind but don’t go too far from the starting point, we need to feel the accomplishment to never give up and always show up.

Efficient and Cozy

How to address this fire? As I mentioned before, we are all excited to do more and better than last year. Even though the winter vacations are over, the days are still so short, dark, and cold. It’s 5pm but we feel like it’s bed time. We have time to exercise but we don’t have the strength to do it on our own or we are slowed down from the weather. The winter excuses take over our desire to be active. We are looking forward to a very active spring. We want to be in our best shape for that. Thus, let's not spend too much time on the couch watching TV and let's exercise in the most efficient way that we know, from the coziness of our home. How much better does it feel watching a TV series with a well-earned hot chocolate or a glass of wine after an intense workout?

The upcoming trimester is the most challenging of the year. If you are a winter sports lover you still need good physical preparation to do your best in the mountains. If you are a summer person, you need to avoid active-depression and that’s when you need an active mentor.

Challenge accepted, let's try to add one workout more than last year to our active routine.
