Pelvic Floor
an active prevention
In our lovely GfM community we have a wide range of backgrounds: young women with no kids, strong men, four pregnancies, and a lot of fresh moms. Everyone has a Pelvic Floor, yet (I am going to speak for all of us) none of us know how to properly train it.
I feel it’s a delicate topic, the importance of which is very underestimated. In the United States, there are Physical Therapists who specialize in Pelvic Floor muscles, in both men and women.
Even so, I feel that it’s not common to ask for help or expertise in this area when we notice issues. For most of us, we have never been explicitly taught to pay attention to this area of our bodies. Issues in this area can range from being too tight due to overuse or overexercising, to too loose after enduring a pregnancy, delivery, or surgery. There can also be issues around knowing how to properly activate pelvic floor muscles versus the lower abdominal muscles. It’s important to know the difference!
why Biceps should be more important than Pelvic muscles?
Preparing the GfM workshop with Music, I realized that non of my coaches, ever taught me to activate those muscles while practicing. Judo is a very intense sport, where most of the time you try to carry another human being. Think about how much stronger in action I could have been if I knew there were more muscles I could use! It makes me wonder how many times in my 25 years of practice I have let those muscles rest, while compensating with other parts of my body? This applies to individuals practicing any sport. How many years did you practice that sport? How many times do you think you unknowingly failed to activate your Pelvic Floor while training? Why have we never considered these muscles? Why does a bicep have more importance and attention than those internal muscles? Having weak biceps doesn’t lead to any major physical complications, while having a loose Pelvic Floor can result in a lot of problems. I have a lot to say about this topic and I am ready to share my personal experience!
let’s wake up those Pelvic Muscles!!!
I would love to see all of us from today with an open mind, ready to learn something new and accept a new challenge.
This applies to all of us: if you are a man with zero problems, if you just had a baby, if you are pregnant, if you are an active young woman, if you were an athlete...today you have the chance to improve the quality of your future and start to get all benefits from the workouts not only for today but for especially for tomorrow.
